Azerbaijan: Free jailed union leaders now
![]() | In partnership with Labor Desk, an alternative Confederation of Trade Unions that provides free legal support, raises public awareness of rampant worker exploitation in Azerbaijan. |
The Labor Desk Confederation of Trade Unions in Azerbaijan is calling for international solidarity following the politically motivated arrests of its chairman Afiaddin Mammadov and fellow unionists Aykhan Israfilov, Elvin Mustafayev, and Mohyaddin Orujov. These arrests are part of a systematic crackdown on independent labor organizing in Azerbaijan, where the authoritarian regime violently suppresses any resistance to neoliberal exploitation and worker self-organization. Founded in 2022, the Confederation has supported precarious and gig workers through legal aid, public mobilization, and protest actions that have drawn fierce state retaliation. The charges against the arrested activists, including fabricated drug and hooliganism accusations, aim to dismantle a growing labor movement and silence its leaders. We demand their immediate release and call on the community to act.
