Québec: Support unions' call for dialogue and negotiations

In partnership with the Education International and Public Services International. Education Internationa is the voice of teachers and education workers around the world. Through its 383 member organisations, EI represents more than 32 million teachers and education support personnel in 178 countries and territories. Public Services Interational is a Global Union Federation of more than 700 trade unions representing 30 million workers in 154 countries.

Education International, its two affiliates in Québec, Centrale des Syndicats du Québec (CSQ) and Fédération Nationale des Enseignantes et Enseignants du Québec (FNEEQ-CSN), Public Services International, and the Fédération interprofessionnelle de la santé du Québec (FIQ) and all public sector unions in Québec need your solidarity to request the government to enter into meaningful collective bargaining.

After a year of negotiations on the renewal of public sector collective agreements, and in light of the inflexibility displayed by the government of Québec, its refusal to listen to workers’ demands and its unjustified attacks on their working conditions, the Front Commun, a common front of unions representing public sector workers, organised a strike action on 21-23 November. FIQ members took strike action on November 23-24.

Some 420,000 workers in the education, higher education, health and social services sectors voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action (95%) and came together as a united front on picket lines to press the government to negotiate.
The Front Commun brings together public sector workers – Centrale des Syndicats du Québec (CSQ), the Fédération des Travailleurs et Travailleuses du Québec (FTQ), the Confédération des Syndicats Nationaux (CSN), and the Alliance du Personnel Professionnel et Technique de la Santé et des Services Sociaux (APTS). The FIQ represents over 80,000 nurses, licensed practical nurses, respiratory therapists and clinical perfusionists who work in healthcare institutions across Quebec.
