Mexico: Freedom for Víctor Licona Cervantes
In partnership with the Hidalgo State Executive Workers' Union – SUTSPEEH, Public Services International – PSI, a Global Union Federation of more than 700 trade unions representing 30 million workers in 154 countries and the Confederation of Municipal Workers of the Americas – CONTRAM. |
On 1 July 2023, at 07:30 am, Víctor Licona Cervantes, General Secretary of the Hidalgo State Executive Workers' Union "SUTSPEEH", was apprehended by police officers on his way to address a General Assembly of his union. Three extremely important issues were to be urgently discussed in the face of the constant provocations and disrespect for trade union freedom by the State authorities, including, the negotiated wage increase and benefit improvements that have not been granted by the authorities of the Hidalgo State Government, the return of the SUTSPEEH offices after a violent eviction and the suspension of administrative sanctions against workers in retaliation for the defence of the union's autonomy and support for Victor Licona.
In the face of these unexpected events, the union assembly did not take place, and instead unionists quickly organized protests and blocked roads. These trade unionists are now suffering intimidation from local authorities.
To date, several court hearings have been held without the true legal situation of Victor being determined, leaving him in a kind of state of defenselessness as he is denied basic rights including visits from family, friends, and fellow union members.
Please join SUTSPEEH, Public Services International, and the Confederation of Municipal Workers of the Americas to demand Victor’s immediate and unconditional release and an end to the repression of other trade unionists.
