Solidarity With Women Striking for a Living Wage!
In partnership with Unifor, Canada's largest union in the private sector, representing 315,000 workers in every major area of the economy. |
Since April 9, 2018, 65 workers at the Port Arthur Health Centre in Thunder Bay Ontario, all women, have been on strike seeking a wage increase and secure employment.
Unifor Local 229 is demanding a living wage an end to precarious work, but this employer seems bent on continuing to devalue women’s work and make profits off the back of these workers. Over 60 per cent of the workers are casually employed, including some who have worked consistent, full-time hours for more than 15 years. Most of the workers experience not only low wages, barely above minimum wage, but also receive no health benefits and no set work schedule from one week to the next.
On April 27, the overwhelming majority of workers rejected a sub-standard final offer from the employer. Since then, the employer refuses to meet with a mediator or the union to reach a settlement.
Please send some solidarity their way and demand that the employer end the strike and bargain a fair agreement.
