Iran: Esmail Abdi back in prison - free him now
In partnership with the Education International, a global union federation of 396 associations and unions in 171 countries and territories, representing some 32.5 million educators and support professionals. |
Tehran teacher union leader Esmail Abdi was taken back to the Evin prison on Saturday 20 January. Esmail Abdi had been released on furlough on 9 January. A temporary reprieve from his six-year sentence started in 2016. Iranian authorities denied extending his furlough, despite his poor health resulting from harsh detention conditions. Abdi’s initial arrest happened to prevent his participation in the 2015 Education International World Congress in Ottawa, Canada. Abdi was targeted for his union activism and campaign for teachers’ rights and for free public education. He was convicted of national security offences in February 2016 after organising peaceful protests. We need your support to urge the Iranian authorities to permanently release Esmail Abdi.
